Going to Matala beach by Annika

Matala is on the south side of Crete. The drive there is interesting with several scenic stops along the way. The beach in Matala is shaped like a horseshoe with sandstone cliffs rising around it creating a sense of protective isolation. Caves riddle the cliffs and were for me the main attraction at Matala. Although access to the caves is now prohibited, over the centuries they have served as refuge and escape for many. During times of persecution, early Christians hid here. Later, they were discovered by hippies and other free spirits who saw the caves as a perfect escape from reality. The beach was sandy and the water inviting but on the day we visited enormous waves and a red flag indicating dangerous undercurrents kept us high and dry. Topless sunbathing is quite common in Greece and at Matala my teenage sons got an eyeful.

Matala beach is very small. It is surrounded by some wonderful tavernas. It does get very busy though especially when coaches comes in as part of the Festos day trip. Look out for Scotty, supposedly one of the last remaining hippies. Other beaches nearby are Red Beach (acceccible only by foot over the mountain) and a good 30 minute and difficult walk. There are areas for naked sunbathing here. Kommos beach (a good walk back towards Ptsidia and also accessible by car). There is one taverna and a \'burger van\'. There are areas for naked sunbathing here too
