Matala is a beach in the southwestern area of Crete. It is a beach with golden sand, sparkling water, and impressive rock formations. But the adventure begins when one attempts to reach the Red Beach, only a twenty minute hike (according to the locals, plan on thirty and we are in pretty good shape), over what looks like a mountain goat trail. The trail was quite hardgoing as we scrambled over loose rocks, both on the way up the mountain, and down to the beach area. But once there. . .
